The San Diego Junior Theatre season consists of about 130 performances of 13 productions a year at Balboa Park's 640-seat Casa del Prado Theater and La Jolla and Chula Vista satellite locations. About 35,000 youngsters a year are served by the theater's classes in the park, in-school programs, and two-week theater summer camps.

Five thousand other students are taught between the Chula Vista location and the most recently added La Jolla location which opened Spring of 2005.

"What's unusual about junior theater is that the entire main stage productions are done by kids, with adult supervision," spokeswoman Theresa Miller said. "If a child has acted in a production, they have to crew before trying out again."

Those non-acting crew positions include everything from working backstage on scenery, costumes and lighting, to ushering and ticket-taking. Year-round classes and the five two-week summer camps cover acting, voice and dance.

"The real strength of junior theater is the support we get from the parents," Miller said. "They're our greatest resource ... and a lot of families stay involved after their children are grown."
