About
One of the few institutions in the country devoted to the photographic arts, the Museum of Photographic Arts houses more than 4,000 works, representing the entire history of photography, its aesthetic movements, and technological advancements. Illustrating the complex and varied history of the medium, the museum's collection is particularly strong in modern and contemporary work, specifically social documentary photography and photojournalism.

Visitors can see works from the entire history of the medium-daguerreotypes and albumen prints from the 19th century, pictorialism to modernism and contemporary works, and photojournalism by renowned photographers working today.The museum is also home to a state-of-the-art movie theater.

Getting there

Address: 1649 El Prado, Balboa Park, San Diego
Directions: From I-5, exit at 10th Avenue. Left on A Street. Left on Park Blvd. Follow signs to Balboa Park.

Tips & Suggestions

The Balboa Park Visitors Center, located in the National Historic Landmark House of Hospitality building, is your primary resource for information about the Park. To help Balboa Park guests decide how to spend their time in the Park, Visitors Center volunteers offer brochures, maps, audio tours and information about museum exhibits, special events, Park recreational activities, free Park guided tours, the gardens, transportation, dining options and more.
