Old Globe Theatre

The Old Globe has a long and, at times, tragic story in Balboa Park. Both the original theater (built in 1935) and the Festival theater were destroyed by fire.

But rebuilding made the company stronger; it received a Tony in 1984 for excellence in regional theater and its Artistic Director, Jack O'Brien, received a Tony in 2003 for Best Direction of a Musical ("Hairspray").

The centerpiece of this complex (formally know as the Simon Edison Center for the Performing Arts) is the 581-seat Old Globe Theatre -- which was modeled after Shakespeare's original.

It operates during winter and summer seasons, as does the intimate 225-seat Cassius Carter Centre Stage next door. The outdoor, 612-seat Lowell Davies Festival Theatre is used in the summer, with at least one Shakespeare production each Festival season.
While the Globe has always mounted Shakespeare productions, it also focuses on developing new works. Some, like "The Full Monty" and Stephen Sondheim's "Into The Woods,'' have made it to Broadway.
